My workplace is farily small. There is only 5 people that work there and the office space itself is fairly small. The werehouse is the only part of the actual building itself that is big. I noticed that when I was doing inventory in the werehouse how much piping actually fits in there. My tripping over boxes and dropping piping on my foot was also a good indecation as well. Oops.  The werehouse is also built the same way as all the other werehouses on the street. My workplace is located in an industrialized area so there are businesses as far as the eye can see. I don't know how many semi trucks I have counted while working there.
I know that most of the workers in the werehouse also probably don't have a degree because all you really have to do is transport material and talk to people. Doesn't really require a whole lot of outside education. The office work however, does require outside degrees because you have to know a lot about business management and accounting. Although it is a small business they do business with much larger businesses and need to be aware of different protocols and procedures. There are computers everywhere that is for sure. Every couple inches I feel liek I am running into a computer or fax machine or copier or something like that.

In general it seems like I am learning abotut he same as other people just in a different field. I read through, Katrina's, Haleigh's, Julie Grant's, Jaszi's and Veronica's Blogs. They all have blogs that are really specific and explain through what their projects are and how their internships are going everyday. I like my blog and I have tried as much as i can to make it as specific as possible so the only thing I can really think of to do is to continue reading through them and makign sure I'm being clear and specific about my experiences. In order to help others out I can be a good reminder for people who haven't been doing their blogs so that way they can just get them done. It is a real easy A!
I'm actually not getting really bored at my internship anymore because the people I've been workign with are becoming closer to me and I have really good laughs with people at work. It makes the day easier and lunch time is always fun when the guys here are makign jokes and stuff. It's nto so bad even if the work is kinda boring I like the atmosphere. Today i worked with the software which made the time go by really fast,

For my WLE project this week I set up an external hardrive that will be holding all fo the memory for MTRs that the company uses. My project is going to be working on the external hardrive and creating shortcuts on every employees computer to the server so everyone has access to the MTRs. MTRs are Metal Test Reports that employees who work out in the warehouse use to match up with the product they have in stock. Currently the MTRs were already on the server but weren't accessible to everyone and were taking up to much space. Witht he external hardrive and fixed sharing connection on the server now more people can access the MTRs to make sure there products in stock are correct.
I plan to be been done by next week because I got a head start on updating the software and moving all the files onto the external hardrive and setting up access from all fo the Users on the network. Hopefully this will make it a bit easier for the employees here to track the stuff getting shipped to them.

My mentor's name is Anita Bernard. An average day at work for her is working on the DDI system software that works with inventory. She also does invoices, filing, answers phone calls and sends out letters/e-mails to people she needs information from. She became interested in this type of work from a previous job she did that required her to work with invoices and customer service. This job is simplier than her previous job though. To gain these skills she had attended Heald College and got her Associates Degree.
In order to work in this field you really have to be self motivated because the work can be very boring and tedious. You also have to have good communication skills in case something goes wrong or you need help with something. Especially when working in customer service fields you need to be reasonable and patient with people you are communication with. This can be a really good job if you want something relaxing and slow paced. In general try to find what you enjoy and if you enjoy being on the computer all day and communicating with peopl

Today at my WLE I worked again doing data manipulation. I had to go through files and fill in the missing pieces on different spreadsheets. I got through a lot of files faster than I have before which made me really delighted. My mentor worked on calling companies that owe our company money and did work with invoices. She also answered phone calls and sent me on a run to get lunch. =)
As of right now I have 45 hours completed for my WLE! Woohoo! I have my project set up so far but I'm still trying to figure out the essential question and thesis of my project. I first want to see how the project is going to work out before I figure out the question and thesis. It just seems to make mroe sense to me that way. Since I'm not doing an exhibition, I don't think I will take to many pictures but I think I will take a couple just to post up here. So far all is going well. Back to work. =)

During my WLE I use all of the leaderships skills that I have been developing at Impact. In order to get all of the projects doing done on time, I need to communicate with my co-workers, collaborate with them in order to solve problems and to think through the projects I am tryign to complete. One skill that I have learned at both my WLE's from last year and this year is self motivation. When something needs to get done it is important that I can motivate myself without being told what to do in order to finish the task I have set in front of me.
My role as a student isn't too much different as my role as an intern. I'm the student in both in a way. I'm learning different skills and ways to manage my work as an intern much like as I learn as a student. It is just a different setting. It does show me that no matter where you go in life, no matter the situation, the place, the time, you often will be student. You have to learn from who you interact with and from others mistakes. Therefore, you are always the student.

Blog 3 12/03/2010

The company I'm interning for serves a lot of places. I think there is on average about 1,000 companies that profit from Hayward Pipe and Supply every year. Since is a distribution company, many other companies rely on HPS in order to get the specific piping they need. One thing I think this company does extremely well is communicate with each other. All of the employees here are mostly cheerful and communicate information about piping that is getting shipped out. They work hard to make sure everyone is up to date and are just in general great people to talk to.
I'm not quite sure what the weaknesses of my WLE are because so far I haven't seen to many problems or things that need to be imporved. The company is currently in the process of changing programs and that's the only thing that is making work a little chaotic. Other than that there isn't anything that they would need to change.

WLE First Day 11/02/2010

My first official day of WLE was pretty busy actually. I got a jump start on the new software the company is using and even had a short training session with my boss. He taught me how to create part numbers for each of the products so that way later I could put each of the product codes into the new software. I didn't have a lot of down time and all and worked really hard to put as many manufacture codes into the new software.

I don't think I impressed my mentor so much sense she already has a good sense of what I'm capable of however, I was really proud of myself for going through a giant stack of papers and getting all of the codes in by myself. It was tedious work and I'm glad I got through it all. Next time I know I have to finish matching part numbers which is a real challenege so I wonder how that will go. For sure I'm going to need some help with that ut my boss is really nice and he said he will answer any question I have. Other than that I think it will all be well. =)

Intro Post 10/27/2010

I got my internship through my mom since she is the one who is going to be my mentor. I ended up working for her because of specific issues I had with my situation. I do know how to find an internship though and I think one of the main things you need to do in life is to learn how to network. I think this is the best way to find jobs and be able to function better in the work world.

The company I am working for is called Hayward Pipe and Supply (HPS).  It is located in hayward obviously and is a company that sells pipe and pipe fittings. I think it is interesting to see how many companies rely on HPS for pipes that help keep their own companies functioning. I hope this will be a good chance for me to learn how to manage tedious work and better get to know different opperating systems.
